About Herbalism

What is Herbalism

Western herbalism is a form of natural healing that draws from herbal traditions of Europe and the Americas, and that emphasizes the study and use of European and Native American herbs in the treatment and prevention of illness through herbal medicine.

Western herbalism is based on herbalists' clinical experience and traditional knowledge of medicinal plant remedies collected over thousands of years.

Western herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) relies on the properties of the plant to treat symptoms and disease and maintain health.

TCM started in China more than 2,000 years ago.  It is believed that health is maintained by ensuring balance in the body and beyond.  The life force thought to animate the body is Qi, which flows through meridians throughout your body and is divided into Yin and Yang.  Yin and Yang seeks to find balance through the five elements; wood, fire, earth, metal, water.

An imbalance, or blockage of Yin and Yang in the body, is believed to cause disease.  During an initial herbal assessment, we will seek to understand any imbalances you may have.  We will spend about two hours discussing your complete medical history and current concerns.  Next, I will conduct a visual assessment, and TCM tongue and pulse assessment.  Once this is completed, I will have a better understanding of any imbalances within your body.  I will use this information to make vitamin and herbal supplement recommendations the are custom for you.

In addition to herbal plans, as a Herbalist in the Omaha area, I have several local practitioners I can refer you to who provide complimentary treatments to herbs.  Such as acupuncture, Reiki, body work, reflexology, etc.

What's an Initial Herbal Assessment?

An initial herbal assessment is when you and I sit together and we discuss your major health complaints, your current diagnosis and medications, your and past medical history.  This takes us about an hour.  Next, I will start the visual assessment of your hair, skin, nails, eyes, etc.  Then, I will conduct the deeper level assessment of taking your organ pulses and examining your tongue.

Once this is all complete, I will have a better idea of any internal imbalances and be able to make herbal supplement and vitamin recommendations to bring internal harmony.
